What to record
Record the year, set, subject, card number, parallel or variation, language, grading company, numerical grade and certification number. Photograph the front, back, label, seams and any holder damage.
Category-specific checks
- Know whether the autograph was manufacturer-certified or signed later.
- A card grade and autograph grade describe different things.
- Certificate lookup does not replace physical inspection.
How to compare sales
Use completed transactions for the same card, grading company and grade. Separate best-offer listings, auctions, bundled lots, mislabeled cards and outliers. Population data can add context, but it is not a count of cards available for sale.
